There was a period in my work journey where my schedule blurred. Evenings bled into late nights, and weekends became just another extension of the workweek.

However, despite the long hours, I wasn't seeing the results I expected. I often felt exhausted, my thinking was foggy, and decision-making became a struggle. The irony was stark: all that extra effort wasn't leading to better outcomes; it was hindering my ability to operate effectively. I was working harder, but certainly not smarter.

This experience became a turning point. I realized that the relentless "hustle" was unsustainable and, ultimately, counterproductive. I discovered a powerful truth: rest isn't a luxury; it's a fundamental necessity for our brains to operate at their optimal state and for us to use our time more wisely.

My Journey: From Overwork to Smarter Work Through Intentional Rest

Feeling the urge to work through the weekend and burn the midnight oil was my norm for a long time. I genuinely believed that more hours equaled more progress. However, the constant pressure and lack of downtime eventually took their toll. I found myself overwhelmed, anxious, and, ironically, less productive.

Recognizing this unsustainable pattern, I made a conscious decision to change my routines and prioritize rest. The first step was setting clear boundaries on my workday. I established a consistent end time, initially aiming for 5 or 6 PM, and committed to it as much as possible. This immediately created a sense of urgency and focus during my working hours.

The second crucial change was incorporating dedicated rest days. I decided to make Sundays completely work-free. Initially, even the thought of not working on a Sunday felt unsettling. However, I soon discovered the profound benefits. That day of complete disconnection allowed my mind to truly unwind and recharge. I spend time with family, take naps, read, and simply allow myself to relax without any work-related thoughts.

​The impact was transformative. I found that by working less hours, I was actually achieving more. My thinking became clearer, my decision-making improved, and I approached my work with renewed energy and focus on Mondays. That dedicated downtime allowed my brain to consolidate information, process challenges, and return to work in an optimal state. I started working smarter, not just harder.

Brain Breaks: Practical Ways to Prioritize Rest for Optimal Brain Function

Here are actionable ways to incorporate rest into your daily, weekly, and annual routines, drawing from my own experience and research:

Daily Rest Strategies:

  • Schedule Short Breaks: Intentionally block out 10-15 minute breaks every 1-2 hours of focused work. Use this time to step away from your workspace, stretch, take a walk, or practice a mindful breathing exercise.
  • Prioritize Sleep Hygiene: Establish a consistent sleep schedule, create a relaxing bedtime routine, and optimize your sleep environment to ensure you get 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.
  • Embrace "Boketo" Moments: Incorporate short periods of "non-doing" throughout your day. This could be simply gazing out the window, listening to calming music, or just allowing your mind to wander without any specific goal.
  • Practice Mindful Breaks: Engage in activities that bring you to the present moment when you feel yourself getting overwhelmed, such as the 5-4-3-2-1 method or focusing on your breath for a few minutes.
  • Nappachino: Have a cup of coffee and set your time for 35-45 minutes to allow yourself a quick nap. The short nap means you don't get to deep sleep, and the caffeine kicks in as you wake up re-energizing you.
  • Movement: Get up and move around to get your brain fired up in a sluggish afternoon. The Calm app has great movement breaks for 10 minutes to stretch and move right next to your desk..
  • Digital Detox: Set boundaries with technology, especially before bed. Avoid screens for at least an hour before sleep to allow your brain to wind down. I've found keeping most notifications off on my devices significantly reduces the constant temptation to engage with work outside of dedicated hours.

Weekly Rest Strategies:

  • Designate a Rest Day: Choose one day each week where you intentionally disconnect from work-related tasks. For me, it's Sunday, and I've stuck by this firmly for years. Use this day to engage in activities you enjoy, spend time with loved ones, or simply relax and recharge. On Sundays, I don't even allow myself to do housework, shopping, or anything like that.
  • Plan Relaxing Activities: Schedule activities for your rest day that are restorative and enjoyable, whether it's spending time in nature, pursuing a hobby, or simply doing nothing or my favorites - reading and napping!
  • Resist the Urge to Work: Consciously avoid checking emails or engaging in work-related thoughts on your rest day. Treat it as a non-negotiable appointment with yourself.

Annual Rest Strategies:

  • Schedule Vacation Time in Advance: Plan your vacations well in advance and treat them as important commitments. Aim for at least one longer break each year, ideally lasting a week or more.
  • Completely Disconnect: During your vacation, make a conscious effort to disconnect from work as much as possible. Resist the urge to check emails or handle work-related issues.
  • Engage in Relaxing and Enjoyable Activities: Use your vacation time to fully immerse yourself in activities that help you relax, recharge, and experience new things.
