In the early days of a business, the common wisdom is that you should spend nearly 80% of your time on marketing. As the owner, you are the one with the vision and the passion; you are your business's best salesperson.

But let’s be honest: most of us hate "selling." We’ve all encountered that person at a networking event who is so pushy it feels "icky." We don’t want to be that person—we want to be the one people ask to work with.

The secret to moving from "pushy sales" to "magnetic attraction" is providing value before the transaction. Here is how you can stop hanging a shingle and hoping for magic, and start building a system that draws customers to you.

1. Get Known for "One Thing"

The riches truly are in the niches. The biggest mistake business owners make is trying to do everything for everyone. When you do everything, no one knows when to refer you.

  • The Realtor Example: If a realtor says, "I sell any house to anyone," I don’t know who to send to them. But if they say, "I specialize in 55+ communities," I immediately know exactly who to refer the moment I meet a retiree.

  • The Power of One: Pick one core offer and drill into it until you hit your first million. It keeps your energy from being divided and makes your message "stick" in the minds of others.

2. Use Story to Connect Emotionally

Facts and figures are for the logical brain, but decisions are made in the emotional brain.

  • Relatability: I used to find influencer stories annoying until I realized those stories were why I trusted them. They proved they had faced my problems and solved them.

  • The "Burnout" Story: I share my story of burnout not just to vent, but so other overwhelmed business owners see themselves in my journey. It bridges the gap between being a "systems person" and being a human who can help.

3. Prioritize Clarity Over Cleverness

If people don’t understand what you do, they can’t buy it. I used to call myself a "Flow Coach," but "flow" is a fuzzy word.

  • The Pivot: I moved to calling myself the Focus Coach for Small Business Owners. Everyone knows what focus is, and every owner knows they need more of it.

  • Clear Calls to Action: Don’t just say "Read More." Say "Book a Call." Tell them exactly what the next step is.

4. Be Remarkable (The Purple Cow)

Seth Godin famously spoke about the "Purple Cow." In a field of brown cows, you don't notice any of them—until you see a purple one.

  • Standing Out: Use a square business card, a unique name, or even a signature color.

  • Examples of Branding: Peaceful Places with Denise: Always wears purple; her whole brand is associated with that color.

    • Princess Paula: Uses a crown and a memorable moniker to ensure no one forgets her, even if her last name is hard to pronounce.

5. Be Visible (The 3-7-27 Rule)

In the 1930s, they said you needed to see an ad seven times to remember it. Today, with the digital noise, it’s much harder.

  • The Rule: It takes 3 interactions just to be noticed, 7 to be remembered, and 27 to create enough trust for a purchase.

  • Owned vs. Rented Space: You don’t own social media (rented), but you own your website and your email list. Use a regular rhythm—like a weekly email—to stay top-of-mind.

6. Provide Value Through Content

Content creation isn't about selling; it's about helping. By the time someone reaches out to me, they’ve already consumed my tips and podcast.

  • Lowering the Barrier: When you provide value for free, you prove your expertise.

  • The Result: You don't have to "sell" yourself on a call because the client already knows what you can do.

7. Be Upfront with Pricing

Many sales trainers suggest hiding the price until the very end to "build value." This often backfires and wastes everyone’s time.

  • The Software Lesson: I once sat through an hour-long demo only to find the software was 4x the client’s budget. We felt trapped. Another company had a calculator on their homepage—we bought from them.

  • Ballpark Figures: If you can’t give an exact quote (like for construction), give a range or a "starting at" price. It builds trust and filters out leads that aren't a good fit.
